FAQ
Why do I need to use surf wax?
Since it was first created and used in 1935, surfers all around the world discovered its appeal, it was sticky, providing great traction yet still repelled water.
To this day every surfer who paddles, pops-up and intends to ride the wave uses surf wax to grip their board.
Whats wrong with traditional surf waxes?
A major component of traditional surf waxes is paraffin, this is a by-product of petroleum.
Getting the paraffin means processing petroleum which is widely known to be an environmental destructive process.
The process involves bleaching the dark grey sludge to a more acceptable colour, this process emits dioxins.
Dioxins are very toxic chemicals known to cause reproductive and developmental damage and also cancer to those exposed to it.
Commonly a chemical called acrolyn is then added which solidifies the paraffin, this has also been shown to cause cancer.
The chemical process is not over and by the time you select your wax at your local surf shop you have picked up a bar containing more chemicals than you realise.
Considering approximately 95% of surf wax for sale in the global market contains these petroleum by-products, surely there’s a better option!
Environmental Benefits
The major component of Surf Local wax is organic beeswax, a by-product of making honey. We source this locally which is recycling in its purest form.
We use the beeswax instead of paraffin which eliminates the need for petroleum refining and environmental damage.
We only use recycled moulds and packaging which also helps to reduce our footprint.
Application
Basically, you need to apply the wax to the part of the board that you are lying or standing on.
For shortboards, generally apply from the tail to approximately 2/3 of the way up the board towards its nose. Longboarders tend to wax the entire deck so they can walk the length.
You can apply a basecoat of warm water wax before you apply the softer wax, simply to provide maximum traction.
Next step is to apply the wax you have chosen for the water temp you are surfing in. Rub the wax lightly from side to side or in a circular motion. The rubbing motion slightly melts the wax so that it sticks to the boards surface.
Your aim is to leave behind little bumps that will be your grip.
Removal
The easiest way to remove layers of wax from your board is by putting it in the sun to warm the wax. Remember to only leave it there for a few minutes, so you don’t damage the foam core.
Then use a wax comb to gently scrape the wax off and you can start all over again.
Storage
You can simply store your wax in the packaging, or a container of your choice.
Be careful not to leave it in direct sunlight for a long period of time or you may find your wax has returned to a liquid form!
